I am very excited!
Eighteen months after its original publication date in Australia, my memoir, I Belong to No One, is about to be released in paperback form in the USA and Canada, available on Amazon in each country. The publisher is Orion Books under ISBN-13: 978-1409164890.
This is in addition to the already available Kindle, eBook and Audio Book versions. I am not sure about other people, but I know I still prefer to hold paper in my hands, so I am hoping this will be a welcome release.
31st January is THE day. Just a couple of sleeps away.
I have tried to include links to Amazon but for some reason WordPress keeps reverting them to the Australian website. It is easily found, however, by searching I Belong to No One, Gwen Wilson on your local Amazon site. It may also be available on order through your favourite bookstore – I’d be interested to know!
Pre-order price is US$13.03 (regularly US$14.99) or CDN$ 16.82.
Here is what one Amazon reviewer had to say:
“Amazing read, enjoyed the realness and raw emotion in the story. Recommend for anyone to read .. You will enjoy.”
I do so hope it will be well received!
I would be very appreciative if you would help spread the word.
And if you have a GoodReads account and would like to leave a review there, here is a link to my site.
Synopsis:
Rape, teen pregnancy, illegitimacy, domestic abuse – in the 1970s all were shameful secrets that trapped women in poverty, loss and ongoing emotional trauma. This is one woman’s story of all she lost and how hard she fought to survive.
A teenager in the 1970s, Gwen Wilson had a tough childhood. Illegitimate, fatherless, her mother in and out of psychiatric hospitals; it would have been easy for anyone to despair and give up. Yet Gwen had hope. Despite it all, she was a good student, fighting hard for a scholarship and a brighter future. Then she met Colin. Someone to love who would love her back. But that short-lived love wasn’t the sanctuary Gwen was looking for. It was the start of a living hell. Rape was just the beginning. By sixteen she was pregnant, her ongoing education abandoned.
Society did not tolerate single mothers; prejudice and discrimination followed her everywhere. In an effort to save her son, Jason, from the illegitimacy and deprivation she’d grown up with, Gwen chose to marry Colin – and too quickly the nightmare of physical abuse, poverty and homelessness seemed inescapable. I BELONG TO NO ONE is a story of desperate lows, the fight for survival and how it led to one woman’s eventual triumph over adversity.
Aw, this was a very nice post. Finding the time and actual effort to create a top notch articleÖ but what can I sayÖ I put things off a whole lot and never seem to get anything done.

You’re so awesome! I do not believe I have read anything like that before. So great to find another person with some genuine thoughts on this subject matter. Really.. thanks for starting this up. This web site is something that is required on the web, someone with a little originality!

Iím impressed, I must say. Seldom do I come across a blog thatís both educative and amusing, and without a doubt, you have hit the nail on the head. The problem is an issue that too few men and women are speaking intelligently about. I’m very happy I stumbled across this during my search for something regarding this.

It was a very interesting read. A reminder that I have still not written a review. I do like a book in my hands as well.

If you ever have a chance it would be great if you could leave a review. Every little bit helps other readers make up their mind about whether to read it or not.

I don]t know of your blog and story but Derrick’s re-blog caught my eye. I can relate to so much of the above synopsis re: your difficult life–so glad it has brought you to such good victories. I will look for the book in Oregon. And from one writer to another–best of good fortune!

I am so grateful to Derrick for his re-blog and taking my news out to a wider world. I am curious to see how my book will fare in the States. I do know that there are many people there who have been affected by adoption, and who are still fighting to have their records made available to them. While my memoir is not about the search and reunion aspect, it is certainly about the journey to relinquishment of a child. We are in each other’s lives now, and I live in a beautiful place, so the book is overwhelming a triumph over adversity story. I often see you on Derrick’s site but did not know you were also a writer. Congratulations! And – by the way – research for my current book has even revealed a connection in Oregon – in a place called Boring!

Oh my, Boring! Well, Oregonians are very interesting people with a pioneering history–it must be a good connection ultimately 🙂 Thanks for more information; very best wishes for your success!

Thank you so much Jill. And I see you are due for your next publication in March. I wish you every success! It’s a big effort to hold down a job and write a full length manuscript at the same time.

Thank you so much Sofia. I have warm memories of my months working on Crete many decades ago. I retain a soft spot in my heart for the people and their culture. Maybe one day there will be a short story in that! Gwen

Oh thank you so much GP. If you do get around to reading it, you will find it written in a different voice from my blogging. But as you know me through that medium, then you know that everything turned out all right in the end! Thanks so much for your interest 🙂

Where in Melbourne or Ballarat could I get a paperback copy. I’m not good with electronic books.

Thank you so much for your interest! It is still available through Hachette Australia ISBN 9780733634079. You can order a copy through your favourite bookstore and they will get it in for you. Or if you are comfortable with ordering online, you can get it through Booktopia, Dymocks, Angus and Robertson, etc. It will cost around $30. A cheaper version is available online through Book Depository. It is the Orion Books imprint. Same contents, smaller print. Many public libraries also have it in their collection. Do let me know how you get on, and many thanks again.
