IRT Internet TV “The Good Life” Episode 2 – lifting the bar

My Northern Hemisphere followers are delighting in the golden hues of autumn, just as we here in the south should be moving into spring – heralding the arrival of outdoor feasts of light, healthy food.IRT Good Life TV Ben and Gwen Cook Up 2015-10-23 031

To get everyone in the mood, this month’s IRT Good Life programme included a cooking segment, with filming to take place outdoors. (20.00)

Now, as we all know, either time has dimmed our memory of unspoilt spring and summers past – or – weather patterns are becoming seriously screwed. I dressed in white pants and a bright orange top, ready to model warmth and celebrate the colours of the season, but in reality, a stiff breeze was blowing, and it was – by Australian standards – freezing, so this is how I looked when the cameras were not rolling.

IRT Good Life TV Ben and Gwen Cook Up 2015-10-23 004All of us who participate in this project are volunteers, and no one trains us to take the spotlight, so the best we can do is model ourselves on what we see on mainstream TV. I was a bit perturbed that I had come across uncharacteristically stern in the first episode – in fact, my expression reminded me very much of my father – so I tried to lighten up, and discovering that the cook was BEN which rhymes with GWEN was a source of amusement. Which did not make it across the cutting room floor. In fact, all my best jokes were cut from the final segment. Oh well. Such is life.

When I had a corporate job, I “discovered” my nick-name in the office was “Mary Poppins”. What? When I demanded an explanation, I was told, Gwen, “It’s your big hair”. Well, yes. I have always been blessed – or is that cursed? – with very thick hair. For this episode, I was sent off to a new hairdresser. It wasn’t until I saw myself on you-tube that I realised . . . a bit too much application of that blow-dryer, don’t you think?

Those who follow my blog regularly will know I take my military history very seriously, and when I realised I was to news-read a piece on Remembrance Day (aka Armistice Day for us dinosaurs) I practised a sombre tone. I actually asked the producers to record that segment several times, however, the take they eventually selected did not quite capture what I was thinking. (1.55) Lest we forget.

All the photos in this post have been taken by hubbie, Bill, (aka Always, as in, “Always Right”). For this event, I feel he has done a marvellous job, as he has captured me putting on the gloves and pitching in to mould a Lamb Kofta. Pity mine disintegrated on the grill 🙂 And, all my efforts were another piece of the “film” which ended on the cutting room floor.

Well, here it is: a link to Episode 2. Like all good things in life, I hope as we record again and again, I become more comfortable in the role . . . (and I just want to put on record that I still have my boxing gloves in the garage, so I hope that men’s shed physiotherapist comes our way soon!)

  1. Looks like heaps fun. And I seriously cannot see your ‘big’ hair ….. I do love your glasses though, and am hungry for lamb koftas now 🙂

  2. Well this looked like a load of fun. I think they should have included yours disintegrating on the grill – it’s amateur difficulties and not professional success that encourage ordinary folk to have a go! 😅
